Duane Chapman and Andrew Luster – the Amazing Capture…and Its Consequences

In 2003 Andrew Luster, a great grandson of cosmetics pioneer Max Factor and an heir to the Max Factor fortune, was convicted of several counts of rape and will sentenced to more than a hundred years in jail. However, he escaped and went under a new identity in Mexico. However, Duane Chapman, better known as Dog the Bounty Hunter, was able to find and capture him, but things didn’t go out as planned all the way for Chapman. A special on his A&E series Dog the Bounty Hunter was inspired by this. Here’s a look into the story of Duane Chapman and Andrew Luster.

The first part of the story of Duane Chapman and Andrew Luster is that of how Luster got in trouble. Luster had given GHB, an illegal drug used in date rape, to women on three separate occasions in the late 1990s. He was eventually found and arrested after videos of Luster raping the women were found. In 2003 he was convicted of more than eighty counts of crime and was sentenced to more than a hundred years of prison. However, he had escaped prior to the rulings and was sentenced in absentia while he was a fugitive.

In June 2003 Chapman found Luster in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Chapman, along with some members of his family and a television crew, caught Luster. Luster was eventually taken into custody by the Mexican police and sent back to the United States. However, Chapman’s trouble wasn’t over.

The Mexican police put Dog the Bounty Hunter in jail! Chapman was arrested for deprivation of liberty in his capture of Luster. It is argued that he had illegally arrested Luster when in Mexico. In February 2007 Chapman lost an extradition fight in a Mexican court. Although Chapman is free on bond he could be sentenced to four years in jail in Mexico if he is convicted of this crime. However, it is believed that because of the minor status of the crime that Chapman is accused of he would probably only have to pay a fine of a few hundred thousand dollars.

The story of Dog the Bounty Hunter in jail was covered by A&E for a home video release. Dog the Bounty Hunter: The Arrest, which will be available in August 2007, goes into a deep look into the legal proceedings of the case and features interviews from Chapman and his team about the entire experience. It is a first hand look into the whole account of Chapman’s troubles resulting from his capture of Luster.

That in a nutshell is the story of Duane Chapman and Andrew Luster. While Chapman’s work sent Luster behind bars and helps to propel Chapman to fame it didn’t go completely without any trouble.
